The importance of using a towel at the gym

We’ve all been there – a particularly taxing workout has left you well and truly red in the face and pretty hot and sweaty. It’s a great sign that you’ve worked hard and pushed your body to its peak. Sweating is undoubtedly a good sign; it helps to rid your body of toxins and regulates your body temperature to stop overheating.

But whilst sweating is great for us Gym bunnies, it’s important that we remain hygienic during our workouts and considerate of fellow users. This is where a sweat towel comes in handy.

Play your part in communal hygiene

It doesn’t bear thinking about the number of people who have used the treadmill, rowing machine or cross-trainer before you. The Gym is a communal environment and it’s therefore important to keep hygiene at the forefront of your mind. Carrying a sweat towel and bringing it to each workout session gives that extra bit of cleanliness and means you can wipe down the machines for the next user.

Similarly, if you attend workout Classes that involve using communal equipment such as exercise mats or weights, it’s a great idea to take a towel with you to not only wipe down the gear before you start but also at the end of your session.

Keep yourself cool

It’s not just for the advantage of others that you bring a sweat towel to the gym: whilst the benefits of sweating during a workout are plentiful, no one wants to be dripping with sweat throughout their whole session. Experts often advise not to wipe your sweat away unless you’re completely drenched as the perspiration helps to release heat and therefore regulate your core temperature. But when it does get a bit much, that sweat towel will come in use. It will also further help to not spread germs as if you’re missing a towel, you’re more likely to use your hands to wipe sweat away which can in turn spread bacteria.

Hygiene beyond the gym

Don’t forget to wash your Gym towels each and every time you use them; towels soaked in sweat can attract unwanted bacteria so pop it in the wash after every workout.
