If you enjoy music, movement, and group exercise, both Dance Fit and Zumba can offer a fun way to improve your fitness. While the two types of classes share certain features, they are also quite different experiences.

The main difference between Dance Fit and Zumba is that Dance Fit is a broader style of dance-based exercise that can use different music genres and choreography, while Zumba is a branded fitness programme with strong influences from Latin and international music.

Both can provide an energetic cardio workout, and you don’t need a dance background to take part. The right class largely comes down to the music, movements and teaching style you enjoy.

From September, Bluecoat Sports is introducing Dance Fit on Tuesday evenings and Friday mornings. Explore our aerobic classes or check the latest class timetable to find a session that suits you.

What is Dance Fit?

Dance Fit, or dance fitness, is a general term for a fitness class that combines dance movements with aerobic exercise.

Rather than teaching one specific dance style or focusing on perfect technique, the aim is usually to keep your body moving while following routines set to music. Classes may use pop, classic, hip-hop, or other upbeat music, depending on the instructor.

As Dance Fit is not one fixed programme, the class style can vary. This gives instructors more flexibility over their music, choreography and workout structure.

At Bluecoat Sports, Dance Fit is a high-energy aerobic workout with routines set to music ranging from classics to current hits.

What is Zumba?

Zumba is a specific branded dance fitness programme.

A typical Zumba class combines cardio dance with choreographed movements and music, with strong influences from Latin rhythms and international music. Styles such as salsa, merengue and reggaeton are commonly associated with the programme.

Zumba instructors complete specific instructor training, with classes delivered within the established Zumba programme.

There are also different Zumba formats, including Zumba Gold, designed for active older adults, as well as Aqua Zumba and Zumba Toning.

Dance Fit vs Zumba: Key Comparisons

Dance fitness and Zumba both combine music, movement and cardio exercise, but the experience can differ depending on the class format, music and choreography.

Feature

Dance Fitness

Zumba

Format

A general style of dance-based fitness

A branded dance fitness programme

Music

Can include pop, classics and a wide range of other genres

Strong influence from Latin and international music

Dance style

Can draw on different dance styles depending on the class and instructor

Often incorporates Latin-inspired dance movements

Choreography

Flexible and can vary considerably between classes

Delivered within the Zumba programme and teaching format

Class experience

Can vary more depending on the instructor, music and structure

Has a more recognisable overall style, while still varying by instructor

Main focus

Cardio and fitness through dance

Cardio and fitness through dance

Experience needed

Usually no previous dance experience

Usually no previous dance experience

The main differences are in how each class is delivered. Dance fitness can offer more variety in music, choreography and overall style, while Zumba has a more recognisable identity. However, the individual instructor plays an important role in the energy, choreography and atmosphere of either class.

How do Dance Fit and Zumba feel different in a class?

Music and movement

A Dance Fit class can use a broad mix of music, from current chart tracks and classics to pop, hip hop and other styles. The choreography can also vary significantly depending on the instructor.

Zumba has stronger links to Latin music, Latin rhythms and international music, with dance movements often influenced by styles such as salsa, merengue and reggaeton.

If music is a big part of what motivates you to exercise, this can be one of the clearest differences between the two to help you decide which class you might enjoy more.

Structure and teaching style

Dance Fit gives instructors more freedom to shape the class around their preferred music, choreography and teaching style.

Zumba is taught within an established branded programme, although individual Zumba instructors still bring their own personality, choreography choices and energy to each session.

In both cases, the focus is on exercise and movement rather than learning dance steps to a professional standard.

Class atmosphere

Both can feel more like a dance party than a traditional gym workout, but the atmosphere will depend heavily on the instructor and group.

Some classes may feel high-energy and fast-paced, while others may be more relaxed or easier to follow. The teaching style, music choices and people attending can all affect the experience.

What do Dance Fit and Zumba have in common?

Despite their differences, both are forms of dance-based aerobic exercise designed to keep you moving to music.

Both:

Use instructor-led choreography

Can support cardiovascular fitness

Involve full-body movement

Can suit a range of fitness levels

Offer a social way to exercise

Are generally accessible without previous dance experience

For many people, the appeal of both is that exercise feels less like a conventional cardio workout and more like moving to music in a group.

How do Dance Fit and Zumba compare for intensity?

Neither class is automatically harder than the other.

Intensity depends on the pace of the class, the choreography, the instructor, and how much energy you put into the movements. A high-energy dance class can provide a challenging cardio workout, while beginners can usually reduce the intensity and work at their own pace.

Both can support cardiovascular fitness and cardiovascular health as part of a regular exercise routine.

Dance fitness may also contribute towards fitness goals such as improving stamina or supporting weight management, although factors such as strength training, nutrition and overall activity levels are also important.

Are Dance Fit and Zumba suitable for beginners?

Yes, you don’t need to be an experienced dancer or have dance experience to enjoy either class.

It may take a little time to become familiar with the choreography, but the goal is not to perform every dance move perfectly. Follow the instructor, keep moving and work at a pace that feels manageable.

Building confidence often comes naturally as you attend more classes and start recognising common movement patterns. A supportive instructor can also help beginners feel more comfortable by demonstrating the dance steps clearly and encouraging everyone to work at their own level.

How to decide between Dance Fit and Zumba

Neither option is necessarily better. Think about which class style sounds more enjoyable to you.

Dance Fit may suit you if you:

Enjoy a broad mix of music genres

Like variety in choreography

Want a flexible dance workout

Enjoy pop, classics and upbeat music

Want cardio that feels different from a traditional gym session

Zumba may suit you if you:

Enjoy Latin music and international rhythms

Like energetic dance movements

Prefer a recognisable class format

Enjoy a high-energy dance party atmosphere

Want to explore different Zumba class styles

The best workout is one that supports your fitness goals and that you enjoy enough to keep doing regularly.

Summary

Dance Fit and Zumba both combine music, movement, and aerobic exercise, but the class experience can differ in music, choreography, structure, and teaching style.

Dance Fit is a broader form of dance fitness that offers more flexibility in class structure, while Zumba is a branded programme with stronger Latin and international music influences and a more recognisable overall format.

Both can provide an energetic cardio workout, support cardiovascular fitness and suit a range of fitness levels, including beginners. Ultimately, the right choice depends on the music, movements, atmosphere and class style you enjoy most.

Outdoor exercise can be a great way to add variety to your routine, enjoy some fresh air and find new ways to stay active. From outdoor fitness classes to running, padel and strength training, there are options for different goals and fitness levels.

Some of the best outdoor fitness classes and activities include track running, padel and outdoor gym training. The right choice depends on whether you want to improve cardio, build strength, enjoy a social sport or follow a structured class.

At Bluecoat Sports, you can train on our 400m athletics track, play padel on our covered outdoor courts or head to The Fitness Yard for a workout using state-of-the-art fitness equipment.

Explore our class timetable and find out more about becoming a Bluecoat Sports member today.

Why choose outdoor fitness?

Adds variety to your regular fitness routine

Enjoy fresh air and a change of environment while you train

Supports cardio, strength, coordination and endurance

Moving your workout outdoors can be a simple way to add more variety to your fitness routine. Whether you’re running, strength training or joining an outdoor exercise class, the change of environment can make your usual workout feel different while still helping you work towards the same fitness goals.

Outdoor fitness also gives you plenty of flexibility. You might use the track for a steady run one day, complete a strength-training session in an outdoor gym later in the week, or play a game of padel when you want something more social and competitive.

It can also complement indoor training rather than replace it. Combining outdoor exercise with gym sessions, swimming or other fitness classes can help you create a more varied weekly routine and work on different areas of fitness, including cardio, strength, coordination and endurance.

The best outdoor fitness classes and sports

The best outdoor activity depends on what you want from your workout. Some people prefer the structure of a running session, while others are more motivated by group exercise or a competitive sport.

Running and track workouts

Track training is a flexible way to improve cardiovascular fitness, endurance and running performance while exercising outdoors. As the distance is clearly measured, it is easy to plan a session around your current fitness level and gradually increase your distance, pace or intensity over time.

Beginners might start with a brisk walk, a run-walk session or a few steady laps. As your fitness improves, you can build up the distance, increase your pace or introduce short bursts of faster running.

More experienced runners can use a track for structured interval sessions, tempo running and sprint work. For example, you could alternate a faster 200m effort with an easier 200m recovery, or complete repeated laps at a consistent pace.

Is track right for you?

Track sessions can be a good choice if you:

Want to improve cardio and endurance

Prefer exercising independently

Are training towards a running event

Want an alternative to treadmill running

Like having clear distances and progress to measure

If you’re preparing for a running event, read our guide to training for your first 5K, or discover more ways to boost your endurance with track workouts.

The Bluecoat Sports athletics track is a six-lane all-weather track. Members can use it as part of their membership, while non-members can book sessions on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Padel

If you want a structured workout that combines strength, cardio and functional fitness, outdoor gym classes are a great option.

At Bluecoat Sports, group classes in The Fitness Yard, such as Bootcamp, Boxfit, Kettlebells and HIIT, can combine weights, bodyweight exercises and short bursts of higher-intensity activity, with instructors helping you work at a level that suits your fitness.

The group setting can also provide extra motivation, support and engagement among attendees, while The Fitness Yard is covered during winter, helping outdoor sessions continue when the weather is less predictable.

You can also use the outdoor gym independently as part of your own workout, or train with a personal trainer if you prefer more individual guidance.

Outdoor gym classes can suit you if you:

Want to combine strength, cardio and conditioning

Prefer instructor-led workouts

How to choose the best outdoor fitness activity for you

There is no single best outdoor fitness class or sport for everyone. The right option depends on what you enjoy, what you want to improve and how you like to exercise.

Choose track training if your main focus is cardio, running or measurable progress.

Try padel if you want a social sport with plenty of movement and a competitive element.

Head to the outdoor gym if your priorities include strength training, functional fitness or a HIIT workout.

Choose outdoor fitness classes if you prefer a planned session with an instructor and group support.

You can also mix activities across the week. For example, complete one strength session at The Fitness Yard, play padel with friends, and use the track for a steady run or an interval workout.

Combining indoor and outdoor exercise

You don’t need to choose between indoor and outdoor exercise. Combining both can add variety and make it easier to adapt your routine around your goals, schedule and the weather.

You might use the indoor gym for weights, head to The Fitness Yard for functional training, use the track for cardio and play padel at the weekend. Swimming or other fitness classes can add even more variety.

Remember to include recovery time and stretching between harder sessions. Nutrition, sleep and stress management also form part of the bigger picture when you are trying to train consistently.

Outdoor workouts beyond the gym

Exercise is easier to maintain when it feels enjoyable. While some people love running, cycling or working out in the gym, others are more motivated by music and the energy of exercising with a group. This is where dance fitness can be a great choice.

From September, Bluecoat Sports is introducing a Dance Fit class on Tuesday evenings and Friday mornings. Included in our memberships and pay-as-you-go, the class combines energetic aerobic routines with music ranging from classics to current hits. You follow the instructor, enjoy the rhythm and keep moving at a level that feels right for you.

Whether you already enjoy dance classes or are looking for a fun way to become more active, dance fitness can support your physical health, mental health and overall fitness. In this guide, we explore these benefits and how to make dance fitness part of your weekly routine.

Find out more about Dance Fit on our aerobic classes page, and check the Bluecoat Sports class timetable for the latest session times. If you have any questions, please call reception on 01403 247572.

What is dance fitness?

Dance fitness brings together aerobic exercise, music and dance-inspired movement to create an energetic full-body workout. Rather than teaching one particular dance style or preparing participants for a performance, the focus is on staying active, raising the heart rate and enjoying the session.

You don’t need any previous dance experience to take part. Beginners can follow the instructor, become familiar with movements over time and work at a pace that suits them. It also doesn’t matter if you miss a step or lose the rhythm occasionally – the aim is to keep moving, enjoy the music and get the most from the workout.

The physical benefits of dance fitness

Dance fitness is an enjoyable way to work the whole body while improving general fitness. As the routines combine continuous movement with changes in pace and direction, each class can support several areas of physical health benefits.

Improves cardiovascular fitness

Moving continuously to music challenges the cardiovascular system and can help improve stamina over time. It can also provide an alternative to running, cycling or using cardio equipment.

If you find repetitive exercise difficult to maintain, the combination of music and changing routines may make it easier to stay active throughout the class.

Provides a full-body workout

Dance involves much more than moving your feet. Steps and changes of direction work the legs, while arm movements engage the shoulders and upper body. Maintaining good posture and controlling turns can also involve the core, creating a varied workout that can feel more engaging than using one exercise or piece of equipment.

Supports balance, coordination and agility

Following a dance routine can involve moving your arms and legs in different patterns, responding to changes in the music or adjusting direction quickly.

These movements can support balance, coordination and greater control over how your body moves. They may feel challenging at first, but they often become easier and more natural as you become more experienced.

Helps you stay active during the week

A scheduled class can make it easier to include regular physical activity in your routine. You don’t need to plan a workout, select exercises or count repetitions. You can simply arrive, follow the instructor and enjoy the session.

With Dance Fit taking place on Tuesday evenings and Friday mornings, you can choose the time that best fits around work, family and other commitments.

The mental and emotional benefits of dance fitness

The benefits of dance fitness are not limited to physical health. Music, movement and exercising with others can also make a positive difference to your mood, confidence and overall wellbeing.

Can boost your mood

An upbeat song, an energetic routine and the atmosphere of a group class can help make exercise feel positive and enjoyable. Completing the workout may also leave you feeling energised and with a sense of accomplishment.

As the focus is on moving to music, dance fitness can feel like great fun rather than simply another workout to complete.

Provides a break from everyday stress

Dance fitness requires you to focus on the instructor, the rhythm and the next movement. This can give your mind a break from work, responsibilities and other everyday pressures. Enjoyable physical activity can also support your overall wellbeing.

Builds confidence

Learning new routines and seeing what you can achieve can give you a real sense of accomplishment. Over time, you may feel more comfortable following the instructor, trying unfamiliar movements and trusting your ability to keep up with the class.

How music can support physical activity

Music plays an important role in dance fitness by setting the pace, shaping the energy of each routine and giving you something to move in time with.

Faster songs can encourage more energetic movement, while steadier tracks can provide time to recover. Following the beat may also make it easier to maintain a rhythm, stay focused on the routine and keep moving throughout the workout.

How to make Dance Fit part of your weekly routine

Dance Fit can be one of your cardiovascular workouts or part of a wider fitness plan alongside strength training, swimming, walking or other activities at Bluecoat Sports.

When planning your week, consider the type and intensity of your other workouts. For example, you may choose Dance Fit on a day when you want an energetic cardio session, then balance it with strength work, lower-intensity exercise or rest on other days.

The Tuesday evening and Friday morning sessions give you flexibility to choose the option that best suits your schedule and other commitments. Attending at a regular time can also make it easier to build the class into your routine and stay consistent.

Explore the Bluecoat Sports timetables to view our full range of classes and activities.

Summary

Dance fitness combines music, movement and aerobic exercise to create a fun, full-body workout. It can support cardiovascular fitness, coordination, balance, confidence and overall physical health, while also helping to boost your mood and provide a break from everyday stress.

The varied routines and group atmosphere can make physical activity feel more enjoyable and help people of different fitness levels stay motivated. As no previous dance experience is required, Dance Fit can be a great choice for beginners and anyone looking for a more social way to exercise.

Join the new Dance Fit class at Bluecoat Sports

Training for your first 5K is an exciting challenge. Whether you’ve entered a race, want to improve your fitness or simply feel ready to start running, having a clear goal can give you something to work towards.

For many beginners, five kilometres can sound daunting, with questions about how quickly you should run, whether you need to complete the whole distance without stopping, and how to tell if you’re making progress.

This guide explains how a running track can make the process feel much more manageable. With a measured distance, predictable surface and clear lap markers, you can focus on building endurance and confidence without worrying about planning a route.

At Bluecoat Sports, our new outdoor athletics track in Horsham, West Sussex, provides a dedicated place to work towards your first 5K at your own pace. Explore our membership options, book a pay-as-you-go track session or call reception on 01403 247572 for assistance.

Why use a running track for your first 5K?

You can prepare for a 5K in many ways, but a running track offers several useful benefits for beginners:

Clearly measured distances: A standard outdoor track measures 400 metres around the measured inside lane, so a 5K is 12.5 laps. This removes some of the guesswork from training.

A predictable running surface: There are no road crossings, unexpected hills or sudden changes in terrain to interrupt your rhythm.

Easier pacing: The consistent distance and layout make it easier to focus on your breathing, pace and how your body feels.

Suitable for all abilities: Tracks are not only for fast or experienced runners. They can be used for brisk walking, gentle jogging, easy running, the walk-run method and controlled intervals.

Simple to adapt: You can move at a pace that suits your current fitness level and switch between walking and running as needed.

Progress is easier to recognise: You may notice that you can run for longer before walking, complete another lap comfortably or recover more quickly after each effort.

Keep in mind that you don’t need to complete all 12.5 laps when you start your individual training program. Instead, focus on one lap, the next kilometre or maintaining a comfortable effort for a little longer.

How to train for your first 5K on a running track

Once you understand how the 5K distance breaks down on a track, you can start training in a way that suits your current fitness and experience.

You don’t need specialist equipment or a rigid 5K training plan. The key is to arrive prepared, start slow at a manageable level and build gradually as your body adjusts.

Get ready for your first track session

A little preparation can make your first sessions more comfortable:

Wear suitable running shoes: Choose supportive trainers that fit well and are suitable for exercise.

Dress for the conditions: Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely, with layers when needed.

Bring water: This is particularly useful in warmer weather or during longer sessions.

Train with a friend: Running or walking with someone else can make sessions more enjoyable and help you stay motivated.

Ask for advice: Speak to the Bluecoat Sports team or a qualified fitness professional if you’re unsure where to begin.

Set a simple goal: This might be completing several comfortable laps, spending a certain amount of time moving or trying a mixture of walking and jogging.

Building up to your first 5K is a gradual process and may take several weeks or months, depending on your starting point. Focus on manageable sessions and steady progress rather than rushing to cover the full distance. With our dedicated Bluecoat Sports app on iOS and Android, you can record your workouts and track your progress along the way.

Start at a comfortable pace

Begin at a pace that feels controlled rather than trying to run too quickly from the outset. During an easy run, you should usually be able to speak in short sentences without struggling for breath. If you feel exhausted after the first lap, ease back or return to walking.

Try not to compare yourself with other runners on the track, as they may have more experience or be training for a different goal. Giving your body time to adjust will help you build endurance more steadily and reduce the risk of doing too much too soon.

Read our guide on boosting endurance with track workouts.

Use the walk-run method

The walk-run method combines brisk walking with gentle jogging or running, helping you spend longer moving without becoming too tired.

A running track makes this easy to manage, as you can use the straights, bends, markings or complete laps as cues for changing pace. This can help you control your breathing, build endurance gradually and gain confidence before attempting longer running sections.

There is no fixed balance between walking and running, so adjust each session according to how you feel.

Build towards the full distance gradually

Focus on small improvements, such as running slightly farther before walking, completing another lap or finishing with more energy. Avoid increasing your distance, speed and training frequency all at once, as doing too much too soon can lead to fatigue and increase the risk of injury.

Some sessions will naturally feel harder than others. Sleep, stress, weather and other factors can all affect performance, so slowing down, repeating a familiar distance or taking an extra rest day should be seen as sensible parts of training.

Use the track to practise pacing

Starting too quickly is a common mistake among new runners. You may feel fresh during the opening laps, but an overly fast start can make the rest of the session much harder.

As each lap covers a consistent distance, a running track is ideal for learning what a sustainable pace feels like. Focus on maintaining a steady effort rather than chasing a specific lap time, using your breathing and overall effort as guides.

Allow time for rest and recovery

Before running, warm up with brisk walking or gentle jogging to gradually raise your heart rate and body temperature. Dynamic stretches such as leg swings or walking lunges can also help prepare you for the session ahead and reduce the chance on injuries.

Afterwards, be sure to cool down. Slow to an easy jog or walk rather than stopping suddenly. This gives your breathing and heart rate time to settle, providing a more comfortable end to your workout.

Rest days give your body time to recover and adapt to running, so you do not need to train every day. Gentle walking, swimming or cycling can provide active recovery between track sessions.

When you feel ready to complete your first 5K

When you feel ready to attempt the full distance or take part in a race, avoid making sudden changes to your training in the final week. Keep the last few sessions comfortable, allow time to recover and wear familiar running shoes and clothing.

Start at a controlled pace, focus on your own effort and use walking breaks if needed. Whether you run the whole way or use the walk-run method, completing your first 5K reflects the progress you’ve made.

Running track tips before you start

Before your first session, ask a member of the Bluecoat Sports team about any track rules or lane arrangements you need to follow.

A few basic points will also help you train safely and confidently:

Use the appropriate lane: Lane arrangements vary between tracks and sessions, so follow the signs or ask the team which lanes are best for running, jogging and walking.

Look before changing lanes: Be aware of runners approaching from behind and avoid moving suddenly across the track.

Remember that outer lanes are longer: A lap is only exactly 400 metres in the measured inside lane. If you train in an outer lane, you will cover slightly more distance.

Choose a quieter time: If you’re new to track running, a less busy session can help you learn the layout and settle into your pace.

Following the track guidance will help everyone enjoy their session and make the most of their training.

Summary

Training for your first 5K is about progressing at a pace that feels right for you. A running track makes it easier to measure distance, practise pacing and build confidence using clear, manageable milestones.

Start with comfortable laps, use the walk-run method if helpful and increase your distance gradually. There is no fixed timeline for completing a 5K, so focus on consistency, recovery and what your body feels ready for.

The summer holidays are a brilliant time for children to get active, try something new and enjoy a break from the school routine. For parents, there’s also the familiar challenge of finding ideas to keep the kids entertained without every day becoming a big day out.

At Bluecoat Sports, summer is about helping children and young people move, play, swim, and build confidence in a supportive environment. Whether you have a little one who loves play-based activities or a child who enjoys swimming and sports, there are plenty of summer holiday activities and holiday camps for kids to choose from.

If you’re looking for ways to enjoy an active summer holiday in the Horsham area, explore what’s on offer this year. Booking for these sessions is now open! Please get in touch with any questions or for help with booking places.

A summer of activity, fitness and fun

Some children want adventure and challenge, others prefer quieter play, time in the pool or a chance to attend activities with friends. For many parents, the goal is to find something that feels fun for children but also organised and worthwhile.

Take a look at our exciting programme of activities for 2026, with something for everyone to enjoy this summer:

With the launch of our new athletics track, this summer we’re running Mini-lympics, an active and engaging way to introduce children to athletics, including foam javelin, triple jump, throwing, and long jump.

Swimming is always one of the most popular summer holiday activities for kids. Time in the pool is fun and refreshing, especially during the warmer months. It also helps children build a skill that can support them well beyond the school holidays.

Aqua Splash!

Our one hour Aqua Splash! sessions are suitable for most swimmers and are an opportunity to splash about in the pool, play family games, and climb on floats.

Family Swim

Our Family Swim sessions run for 45 minutes, where you can bring your own floats, inflatables, and toys to have fun in the swimming pool and burn off some energy as a family. Members can bring up to three guests, and it’s a great chance to unwind.

Our Aqua Splash and Family Swim sessions will appear on the pool timetable two weeks in advance, and will need to be pre-booked by calling reception on 01403 247572.

Next course dates: 3rd – 7th August 2026 / 24th – 28th August 2026

Over the summer we’re running five-day intensive swimming courses. These are ideal for children to improve their technique or even try something brand new. Designed for children aged 4 1/2 + years of all abilities, from beginner to advanced, you can register your interest by completing our form.

Please contact us for more information or if you have any questions.

Active play for younger children

For younger children, summer activities often work best when they feel playful, varied and relaxed. A session that includes movement, soft play, creative activities or gentle challenges can help your little one burn off energy, explore and enjoy quality time with you.

These sessions are available to book via our timetable.

Arts & Crafts

Our popular parent-and-child arts & crafts sessions run for one hour and offer a range of activities for children aged 3 – 8 to get creative in a fun and friendly environment.

Jump ‘N’ Play

Jump ‘N’ Play is a parent-and-child play session suitable for children up to the age of 6. Sessions are one hour each, featuring a bouncy castle, soft play, ride-on cars, and art and crafts. There’s something for every child to enjoy, and it’s a great way to spend time together over the summer.

For parents, these sessions can be a practical way to break up the week. Instead of planning a full family day out, a local activity can give children something exciting to attend while helping to keep the day as stress-free as possible.

Choosing the right activity for your child

Every child is different, so the right activity will depend on their age group and interests.

For younger children, play-based sessions and creative activities can be a great place to start. For children who enjoy the water, swimming activities or family pool sessions can be a brilliant option. For children who love sports, basketball or squash sessions may be ideal.

At our junior holiday camps, children can learn new skills and challenge themselves, all with the support of our dedicated team.

What should children bring?

Running is one of the most popular forms of exercise for improving fitness, boosting cardiovascular health and supporting a balanced training routine. Whether you’re new to running or returning after a break, adding running to your fitness routine can help you unlock new goals and improve your overall performance.

With the launch of our new athletics track on 27th June 2026, there has never been a better time to incorporate running into your workouts. The track provides the perfect space to train, improve your performance and enjoy the many benefits of outdoor exercise.

In this guide, we explore combining running with gym workouts, the advantages of adding running to your fitness routine, and how to get started.

If you’d like to benefit from our state-of-the-art gym facilities and new outdoor athletics track, become a member today. Speak to reception on 01403 247572 for more information.

Why combine gym workouts with running?

Combining running with gym workouts can create a more complete approach to fitness, helping you improve endurance, build strength and support your overall performance. Strength training helps you build muscle, maintain muscle and improve functional strength, while running challenges your cardiovascular system and improves cardiovascular fitness.

A balanced training plan may include:

Weight training sessions

Easy runs

Interval training

Recovery days

By creating a weekly routine that combines different types of exercise, you can improve your body’s ability to handle training, support injury prevention and continue making progress towards your goals.

Strength exercises that target the major muscle groups – including your legs, upper body and core – can support your running technique, improve stability and help you become a stronger runner.

For professional advice on training plans, consider speaking with our personal trainers.

The benefits of adding running to your fitness routine

Running offers a wide range of benefits, whether your goal is to improve endurance, manage your weight, build strength or simply feel fitter.

Improved cardiovascular fitness

Running is an excellent way to strengthen your cardiovascular system. Regular runs can help your heart become more efficient, allowing your body to deliver oxygen to your muscles more effectively.

A moderate-paced run or easy jog can improve your aerobic fitness without placing too much stress on your body. For beginners, starting slow and gradually increasing distance is often the best approach.

Over time, running regularly can help you build stamina, improve cardiovascular fitness and prepare your body for longer distances.

Better muscular endurance and strength

Running does more than improve your heart health – it also challenges your muscles. Your legs work continuously during a run, helping to improve muscular endurance; stronger muscles can support better movement, improve stability, and help you maintain good running form.

Many runners also benefit from adding strength sessions alongside their running programme. Exercises such as squats, lunges and core work can help you build strength, improve performance and reduce the risk of injury.

Support for weight management

Running uses energy and supports fat loss, while lifting weights helps maintain muscle and build lean strength. Maintaining muscle is important because stronger muscles can help your body perform better and support a healthy metabolism.

As your fitness improves, your body becomes more efficient, helping you run further, complete workouts with less energy and continue progressing towards your goals.

Improved wellbeing

Running is not only beneficial for physical fitness but also for your overall well-being. Regular exercise can help reduce stress, improve mood and create a positive routine that supports a healthier lifestyle.

Many people find that making time for a run provides an opportunity to switch off from daily pressures, spend time outdoors and focus on personal goals. Whether it’s a light jog around the track or a more challenging workout, running can help you feel more energised, motivated and confident over time.

How to add running to your weekly fitness routine

Everyone’s fitness journey is different, and the right balance of running, strength training and recovery will depend on your goals, experience level and schedule. Some people may prefer shorter runs alongside regular gym sessions, while others may build towards longer distances or more structured running workouts.

The key is to create a routine that you can maintain. Combining easier sessions with harder workouts and allowing enough recovery time between training days can help your body adapt and continue progressing.

Most runners benefit from including a mixture of different types of runs throughout the week:

Easy runs

An easy run should feel comfortable and controlled. You should be able to maintain a conversation without struggling for breath. These runs help build your aerobic base, improve endurance and help your body adjust to running regularly.

Tempo runs

A tempo run is completed at a faster but controlled pace. This type of workout helps improve speed and teaches your body to sustain effort over longer distances.

Interval training

Interval training involves alternating between harder efforts and recovery periods.

For example, you might run at a faster pace for a set period before slowing down to recover. Intervals can improve running performance, increase speed and help your body become more efficient during harder sessions.

Long runs

Long runs help prepare your body for longer distances by improving endurance. They should usually be completed at an easy pace rather than at maximum effort.

Remember, not every workout needs to be intense. A combination of easier and harder sessions, along with rest days, will help you build fitness safely over time.

Why choose track running?

Unlike road running, a track gives you a measured distance, making it easier to follow a structured training plan and track your progress. Whether you are completing a light jog, interval training session or working towards improving your top speed, the track provides the ideal space for focused workouts.

For beginners, the track can be a great place to build confidence and gradually increase your running ability. For more experienced runners, it offers the opportunity to complete targeted sessions such as tempo runs, speed work and longer endurance training.

With the launch of our new athletics track, our members will have access to a dedicated outdoor space to help support every stage of their fitness journey.

Read our guide on ‘Track Running for Beginners‘ to learn more.

Injury prevention and recovery

When adding running to your fitness routine, it is important to build gradually. Starting slow, increasing distance over time and allowing enough recovery time can help your body adapt and keep you progressing.

Running places demands on your legs, knees, hips and ankles, so supporting your training with strength exercises and mobility work can help improve stability and movement. Rest days are also an important part of any training plan, giving your muscles time to recover and helping reduce injury risk.

By combining running, strength training and recovery, you can create a balanced routine that supports long-term fitness and performance.
