Benefits of Tennis

Physical benefits

Playing tennis is a great sport to:

    • Maintain your health, fitness, strength and agility.
    • Lose weight – it has been calculated that an hour-long game of singles tennis burns around 600 calories for men and 420 calories for women.
    • Help your overall physical fitness by:
      • increasing aerobic capacities
      • lowering resting heart rate and blood pressure
      • improving metabolic function
      • lowering body fat
      • improving muscle tone, strength and flexibility
      • increasing reaction times

Psychological benefits

Tennis also has psychological benefits. As tennis promotes physical fitness, it helps to reduce stress and anxiety and generally improves psychological well being. Exercise increases endorphins, which are the brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters, and has also been found to improve mood and sleep.

Tennis is also a very sociable game, especially when played in doubles. It means players can spend time together and chat while they play, building on old friendships or creating new ones. Many people who have been to our tennis classes have left as lifelong friends. The versatility of the game, whether played competitively or as a gentle rally, means it is a great sport for a variety of people for whatever suits the mood.
